Which Is Better, LVP or LVT, and How Do I Choose Between Vinyl Plank and Vinyl Tile?

LVP means luxury vinyl plank. LVT means luxury vinyl tile. The letters sound like two different materials. On FloorBox they are mostly two shapes of the same idea: a vinyl floor that looks like wood boards, or a vinyl floor that looks like stone or tile. Shop Vinyl Planks and Vinyl Tiles. What actually changes between a vinyl plank and a vinyl tile?

Three things you can see on the product page:

  • Shape and look. A plank is a long board (wood look). A tile is a square or rectangle (stone or tile look).
  • How it goes down. Click Lock / Click means the pieces lock and the floor floats. Glue Down means adhesive holds each piece to the floor.
  • Grout option (some tiles). A few vinyl tiles can be installed with or without grout lines.

The core can be the same idea on both shapes. SPC (stone-plastic composite) shows up on both plank and tile examples below.

When would I pick a glue-down vinyl tile instead?

When you want a tile look that sticks to the floor, and you care about a softer feel than ceramic. The Centura Vinyl Tile UltraCeramic by American Biltrite Natural Travertine Warm Silver 12" x 24" lists Glue Down, 12" × 24", Thickness 4 mm. Its description says it is an alternative to ceramic or stone, warmer and quieter, does not crack, and is available with or without grout. Underpad Attached: No — so there is no pad glued under the tile; the adhesive is the install method.

Both Azura and UltraCeramic copy the look of travertine. For what real travertine is, read What Is Travertine, and Is It a Good Choice for Floors?

How do I choose plank vs tile for my room?

Walk the room in your head:

Neither shape is "better" in the abstract. Match the look of the room, then match click vs glue to how you want the floor to sit.
