Dogs are hard on floors. Claws scratch, paws bring in water and mud, and accidents happen. The best floor for a dog resists scratches, handles water and is easy to clean.

This guide covers each kind of floor, explains which product-page lines matter for pet owners and answers a common question: is any floor really scratch-proof?
No floor is fully scratch-proof, but some resist scratches better than others. Look for these lines on a FloorBox product page:
For most dog owners, yes. Vinyl is fully synthetic. The last two FloorBox examples below are listed as waterproof; the first lists Water Resistant: Yes:
All three have a 0.3 mm wear layer, the clear top layer that takes the scratches. More are in Vinyl Planks. Our guide How Does Click Vinyl Flooring Lock Together? explains the joints.

Yes. Sheet vinyl comes in a roll, so it has fewer seams than planks or tiles. The Tarkett Vinyl Sheet TruTEX Farmhouse Pine Harvest 12' lists Pet Friendly: Yes, Waterproof: Yes and Stain Resistance: Yes. More rolls are in Sheet Vinyl.
Some tile resists scratches very well. The FloorBox Tiles page says some tiles barely scratch and that a quick mop removes stains.
Porcelain is denser than ceramic, so it is more durable and waterproof.
For example, the MSI Floor Tiles Brickstone Red Matte 5" x 10" lists a scratch resistance of 7 on the Mohs scale and water absorption under 0.5%, which means very little water soaks in. Tile is hard and cool, so give your dog a bed or a mat to lie on. More tiles are in Floor Tiles.
Laminate resists scratches well. The FloorBox Laminate page says it is scratch-resistant and suits homes with children and pets.
Water is the weak point, so check the water lines. The Planchers 1867 Laminate Flooring Concerto XL Baryton Oak 7" x 48", for example, lists Water Resistant: No and Waterproof: No, so you need to wipe up accidents right away. Our guide Should I Choose Laminate or Vinyl Planks? compares the two.
Real wood is a natural material, and claws and water can mark it. If you want wood, the FloorBox Wood Flooring page says bamboo's strength makes it popular with families with children or pets. Engineered wood is in Engineered Hardwood.
Carpet is soft and quiet, but pet hair and stains take more work to clean. Carpet tiles are a middle ground. The FloorBox Carpet Tiles page says a damaged tile can be replaced on its own. Our guide Are Carpet Tiles a Good Choice for a Basement? explains how they work.
What is the most scratch-resistant floor for dogs?
The Brickstone Red porcelain tile is a strong choice, because its page lists a scratch resistance of 7 on the Mohs scale. For a wood look, the FloorBox pages describe the vinyl wear layer and laminate as scratch-resistant.
Is vinyl plank flooring a good choice if I have a dog?
Yes. Waterproof vinyl planks handle water bowls and accidents, and the wear layer resists scratches and stains.
Will my dog's claws scratch laminate?
Laminate is scratch-resistant, according to the FloorBox Laminate page. Check its water lines too, because some laminate is not water-resistant.
What is the best flooring for a dog that has accidents?
Pick a floor that lists Waterproof: Yes, like the TruTEX Farmhouse Pine sheet vinyl or the Evolution Magma Pro vinyl planks, and wipe up quickly.
Are these floors also good for cats and other pets?
Yes. The same points apply: scratch resistance, water resistance and easy cleaning.
